Manila Electric Company (Meralco) said it is working to restore electricity to customers affected by southwest monsoon (Habagat) rains and is continuing to monitor the weather situation.
It said that as of 7 a.m. Tuesday, about 167,000 customers, mostly in Metro Manila, Bulacan and Cavite, were without power. The remaining affected customers are in Rizal, Laguna, Batangas and Quezon provinces. Nearly 98 percent of those affected, over 163,000, are in flooded areas.
“We ask our customers for patience and understanding as heavy floods have triggered disruptions in power services,” said Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications Joe Zaldarriaga.
“Rest assured that the safety of our customers and line crews is our top priority and we will immediately restore power in the affected areas once the floodwaters recede and it is safe to do so,” he said.
Meralco also reminded the public to practice electrical safety measures during flooding. These include ensuring the main electrical power switch or circuit breaker is off and unpluging appliances from wall sockets.
Zaldarriaga also encouraged the public to keep all communication channels open and ready, and to charge mobile phones, laptops, radios and other communication devices.
