Midwife arrested over ill-fated circumcision

Circumcision is supposed to be a minor surgery and should not be lethal, but not for this boy who died after receiving a dose of anaesthesia.

Police arrested the 68-year-old midwife who performed the rite of passage on the 10-year -old boy in Tondo, Manila last May 17 for alleged homicide and illegal practice of medicine.

Investigation showed that the suspect injected anaesthesia to her patient, but the boy manifested seizure shortly thereafter.

The suspect, who introduced herself as a doctor, told the parents that the spasm was a normal side effect of the drug, However, the boy got worse and was subsequently taken to the hospital where real doctors failed to save his life.
