Several streets in Manila are now passable and clean following continuous efforts of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in clearing the piles of garbage that cause blockages in the waterways.
In recent operations, MMDA Metro Parkway Clearing Group personnel collected over 58 tons of garbage on Tayuman Street, Jose Abad Santos corner Antipolo Street, Dagupan Street, and New Antipolo Street, all in District 2; and along North Bay Honorio Lopez Boulevard in District 1.
According to MMDA Chairman Romando Artes, their operations will continue using its hauler to collect the piled-up garbage on the streets, which is causing a foul smell that is also affecting the residents of Manila.
In partnership with the MMDA Solid Waste Management Office, the collected waste is immediately taken to the Navotas Sanitary Landfill. The cleanup operation is part of the MMDA’s preemptive anti-flood measures in the National Capital Region.
Artes reiterated his call to the public to refrain from dumping garbage on the streets, especially during the rainy season, to help prevent significant flooding in the metropolis.
The MMDA noted that items such as plastic bags, bottles, cups, and styrofoam take years to decompose if discarded on the streets. Heavy rainfall has caused flooding and traffic along major thoroughfares in Metro Manila, primarily due to drainage systems being clogged with garbage.
To help reduce waste and prevent further blockage of waterways, the agency encourages people to reuse and recycle.
