US frozen spuds go far as hot potatoes in Philippines

Here’s a tater thought: the Philippines is one of the world’s leading export markets for potatoes coming all the way from the United States.

This is according to Potatoes USA, the national marketing and research organization that represents the 2,000 commercial potato farmers operating in America.

The journey is well worth the wait for the Philippines as a top destination for US frozen potatoes, as we are just as hungry for the vegetable as our Western counterparts.

US potatoes make for a versatile kitchen staple as they come available in three formats here in the Philippines.

First, fresh or table stock potatoes (russets, fingerlings, yellows, and reds) are available from November to March in select stores in Metro Manila and Cebu.

Then there are the more familiar frozen potatoes (straight-cut fries, wedges, hash browns, curly fries, etc.) available year-round in groceries nationwide.

Finally, instant or dehydrated potatoes (instant mashed, flakes, granules, etc.) are available in groceries in Metro Manila and are also offered by suppliers and baking supply stores.

Through these different formats, the classic ingredient brings a Pinoy spin to local favorites such as Cheesy Potato Kaldereta Bake, US Frozen Potato Hashbrown Ensaymada, Chicken Siomai, Potato Kinilaw, Pistu Potato Waffles, and Potato Sorbetes, among others.
