President Ferdinand Marcos assured the United States on Friday of the Philippines’ continued support for initiatives that promote shared interests within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Speaking at the 12th ASEAN-U.S. Summit, President Marcos emphasized the importance of the U.S. presence in the Indo-Pacific region, describing it as a “force for peace, stability, and security.”
He acknowledged the U.S.’ consistent contributions to ASEAN and its commitment to supporting ASEAN Centrality in shaping the regional framework.
“We welcome U.S. initiatives that provide platforms for dialogue on critical issues such as emerging technologies, energy transition, climate change, and maritime security,” President Marcos stated.
The president encouraged ongoing cooperation through the ASEAN-U.S. Strategic Partnership Plan of Action (2021-2025), which he noted is nearly fully implemented.
Additionally, he expressed support for the upcoming 2024-2025 ASEAN-U.S. Trade and Investment Framework Arrangement and work plans focused on economic engagement.
Regarding climate change, the president welcomed the first ASEAN-U.S. Ministerial Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change, along with U.S. assistance to the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity.
“On health cooperation, we certainly appreciate the U.S.’ continued support for critical health areas, including public health emergency management and pharmaceutical regulation,” he shared.
Before concluding his remarks, President Marcos highlighted ASEAN’s enthusiasm for future programs such as the ASEAN Youth Volunteers Programme, the Fulbright ASEAN-U.S. Visiting Scholar Programme, and the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative.
“Please be assured of the Philippines’ continued support for projects advancing our common interest in the collective peace, stability, and prosperity of our region,” Marcos affirmed.
