The Sandiganbayan has appointed two new associate justices including Muntinlupa Judge Gener Gito and Mandaluyong Judge J. Ermin Ernest Louie Miguel.
It can be recalled that Gito acquitted former Senator Leila de Lima in June, the Supreme Court (SC) earlier said.
In 2023, Gito granted bail to De Lima before granting the demurrer to evidence which paved the way for her acquittal in the last drug case filed during the Duterte administration.
In dismissing the case, he said the witnesses’ testimonies failed to establish that there was a conspiracy to commit illegal drug trading.
The former senator is now running under the party-list Mamamayang Liberal for the upcoming 2025 midterm elections.
The Sandiganbayan is a special court that has jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases involving graft and corrupt practices and other offenses committed by public officers and employees, including those who are in GOCCs.
