Marcos to advance Philippines’ national interests at ASEAN Summit

President Marcos vowed to push for the Philippines’ interests in his engagements with neighboring countries as he left Manila on Tuesday to attend the 2024 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Vientiane, Laos.

In his departure speech, the President stressed the importance of the ASEAN Summits as an avenue for the Philippines to discuss issues confronting the region on geopolitical matters and functional cooperation.

This year’s ASEAN Summit carries the theme of ‘Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience’ and is held from October 8 to 11.

“The ASEAN Leaders will explore how we can promote regional connectivity amongst ASEAN Member States, as well as to strengthen our resilience to promote sustainable development and inclusive growth,” according to the President.

President Marcos will also have meetings with ASEAN’s external partners to advance cooperation in food and energy security, trade and investment, supply chain resilience, MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises), and addressing the impacts of climate change.

He highlighted his resolve to advance the Philippines’ interest in discussing international issues that affect the region, particularly in the West Philippines Sea.

The ASEAN leaders also will be discussing other issues and geopolitical matters such as the situation in Myanmar and the conflict in Ukraine.

“This administration will continue to ensure that our constructive and deepening engagements with ASEAN, our Dialogue Partners, and stakeholders serve our national interest and the well-being of the Filipino people,” President Marcos said.

The President designated Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella III as government caretakers while he is away on a business trip, according to a report from the Philippine News Agency.
