DPWH completes P94m flood control project in Mindoro

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the P94 million flood control project in Occidental, Mindoro, ahead of its scheduled completion in December this year.

DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan said the completed infrastructure, the Riverside flood control project in Barangay Tubuli, Paluan, Occidental Mindoro will protect communities from the adverse effects of flooding along the Apnikan River.

The project involves the construction of a 431-linear meter concrete revetment wall with steel sheet piles reinforcing the riverbank’s capacity against heavy and persistent flooding, causing bank erosions and water overflow to nearby communities.

DPWH Regional   Director Gerald   Pacanan said the completed project is one of the numerous disaster mitigation measures that the Department has established in Occidental Mindoro, fostering a more comprehensive and effective flood control plan in the region.

“Before the completion of this project, frequent flooding in the Apnikan River and its adjacent Tubili River severely affects agricultural land, livestock, properties, and the livelihood activities of the residents in Barangay Tubili,”   Pacanan said.

The flood control structure is funded through the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2024.
