Taal Volcano quiet after minor eruption, says Phivolcs

After its minor phreatomagmatic eruption on Wednesday, Taal Volcano in Batangas remained quiet without a single volcanic earthquake in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Thursday.

Phivolcs director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol said molten magma came into contact with water and caused a minor eruption lasting a total of 11 minutes and producing a 2,400-meter-tall plume.

“It’s a minor phreatomagmatic eruption. It’s not the same as when it happened in 2020 when our eruption column reached 15 kilometers. This is only two kilometers,” he said.

Sulfur dioxide emissions remained low at 2,532 tons on Wednesday with no volcanic smog detected.

Alert level 1 remains over Taal Volcano, indicating possible gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes and minor ashfall.

Bacolcol urged the people within the area to beware of phreatic or steam-driven eruptions from time to time when hot volcanic material comes in contact with water.
