The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) on Tuesday reported the launch of the Hamugaway Peace Center in Tandag City last August 15.
The center, funded with PHP 5 million from OPAPRU, aims to support former rebels who have returned to the government, offering a space for peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and reintegration into society.
Surigao del Sur Vice Governor Manuel Alameda Jr. and other officials highlighted the center’s role in fostering understanding and compassion.
“Our hope is that this Peace Center will serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all who seek to make a positive difference in the world,” Alameda said.
Governor Alexander Pimentel reiterated his call for the New People’s Army (NPA) to end armed conflict and emphasized the government’s commitment to former rebels.
OPAPRU Deputy Presidential Peace Adviser USec. Isidro Purisima, who represented Presidential Peace Adviser Sec. Carlito G. Galvez, Jr. in his keynote address for the occasion, highlighted the importance of the Peace Center in the province’s overall peace-building efforts.
“This Peace Center is not just an ordinary facility. More than anything else it is a symbol of our collective goal – to bring long-lasting peace to the province,” Purisima said.
