The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), together with the municipality of Hagonoy and the Hagonoy Water District, unveiled the monument and historical marker commemorating the Battle of Bangkusay.
The ceremony took place on Aug. 14, graced by NHCP Executive Director Carminda R. Arevalo, Hagonoy Mayor Flordeliza C. Manlapaz, Mayor of Macabebe, Pampanga, Leonardo B. Flores, Hagonoy Vice Mayor Ma. Rosario Sy-Alvarado Mendoza, Hagonoy Water District General Manager Celestino S. Vengco, Provincial History, Arts, Culture and Tourism Office (PHACTO) Director Dr. Eliseo Dela Cruz, and Department of Tourism, Culture, and Arts of Manila Department Head Charlie DJ Dungo.
The historical marker commemorates the Battle of Bangkusay, where locals resisted Spanish rule in Manila. About 2,000 Muslims from Macabebe, Hagonoy, and other parts of Pampanga headed to Tondo to fight against the Spaniards on May 31, 1571. The battle led to the death of 300 native warriors, along with their leader.
Notably, the leader was incorrectly believed to be Rajah Soliman before being formally corrected in 2021 by the NHCP, through a historical marker at Plaza Moriones in Tondo, which referred to the nameless hero as the Brave Youth of Macabebe.
