Styling your favorite pair of wide pants

With ‘90s fashion making a comeback, the trend of wide pants has recently been taking the world by storm. From light denim cowboy pants for casual wear to black chino pants for the office, the wide pants trend has been growing in popularity among fashion enthusiasts as well as those looking for a simple and functional yet stylish look.

Celebrity stylists Cath Sobrevega and John Lozano have been incorporating these pieces into the stylish outfits that they curate for their clients. During a recent style talk hosted by clothing brand Uniqlo, the pair gave tips about how one can boost their outfit for the day with their comfortable wide pants.

Sobrevega pointed out that the wide pants have been a staple in one’s closet since it first became a trend in the 1920s.

“Wide pants can be flattering for all body types. It elongates the legs and they create a balance well. They’re flattering and comfortable,” she said.

As versatile pieces, Sobrevaga said that wide pants can be used for work, travel, and even casual days. A pair of pleated wide pants can be matched with a blouse or a top with a blazer for a comfortable day at the office. Denim pleated jeans, wide chino pants, and wide straight jeans can be mixed and matched with loose tops, sweaters, and jackets while traveling through any type of weather. For casual wear, wide straight jeans, wide straight cargo pants, and dry sweat wide pants can be paired with a sleeveless top or even a jacket.

Lozano also shared that there can be many creative ways in styling one’s wide pants but the main things to remember boil down to three: proportion, illusion, and silhouette.

For proportion, the stylist said that when styling wide pants or any type of outfit, the 3/4’s Rule should be followed. While it can often be broken, the rule meant that the bottom part should ideally be 3/4’s of the entire outfit as it makes the legs look longer than the torso. Wearing a belt can also have the same effect as it emphasizes the waist and elongates the legs.

When it comes to illusion, wearing tops and pairing it with accessories that form a V shape can make one appear to have a longer neck. Lozano demonstrated this with what he was wearing which was a tucked in and half unbuttoned flannel over a white sleeveless sando.

“If you want to look a little bit slimmer, a little bit longer, you create illusions with shapes,” Lozano explained.

Wearing monochrome colors also gives the illusion of someone looking taller as it visually appears to be one line. Cropping the pants can also make it seem shorter than one’s legs, thus creating the illusion of one being tall.

For silhouette, wide pants can be worn with baggy shirts for a flattering baggy-on-baggy look. While still abiding by the 3/4’s Rule, cropped tops can also be worn with a cardigan or a jacket. A fitted top matched with wide pants can also make one look flattering.

“At the end of the day, if you feel good [or] if it feels right when you look at the mirror, do it,” said Lozano.

Apart from the celebrity stylists, actors Jericho Rosales and Donny Pangilinan also graced the style talk and shared about how they use wide pants from Uniqlo’s collection to stay comfortable and stylish as they try to express themselves through their outfits.
