Fil-Chinese business chamber lauds total ban on POGOs

The Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) announced its support for President Bongbong Marcos’s decision to impose a total ban on all Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) during the State of the Nation Address (SONA).

The Fil-Chi business group anticipates that this decision will lead to enhanced peace and stability in the country.

“It is hoped that this will improve the Philippines’ international public image, enhance peace and order, and help strengthen our country’s bilateral relations with China, as the Chinese government has long requested a total ban on the controversial POGOs,” Cecilio K. Pedro, President of FFCCCII, stated.

In addition to endorsing the POGO ban, Pedro welcomed the de-escalation of tensions in the West Philippine Sea and affirmed the President’s stance on de-escalation as the “right direction” for fostering positive growth in the Philippine economy.

Earlier reports revealed that other business groups in the Philippines, including Makati Business Club, Alyansa Agrikultura, Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines, Foundation for Economic Freedom, Institute of Corporate Directors, Justice Reform Initiative, Management Association of the Philippines and the UP (University of the Philippines) School of Economics Alumni Association, supported the total shutdown of POGOs in the country.

The group cited that POGO-related kidnappings, reported by the Philippine National Police, accounted for 55% of the 31 kidnapping cases in 2022.
