Amid the possibility that she would be facing her brother-in-law Rep. Luis Campos in the Makati mayoralty race, Sen. Nancy Binay admitted she would probably campaign for younger sister Abigail’s senatorial bid, just in case.
Meanwhile, former senator Leila De Lima said she would not be running for a political position in next year’s mid-term elections.
“My sister is a lawyer and just like now, Secretary Sonny Angara who is also a lawyer is no longer with us, so we have shortage for lawyers,” said Binay, stressing that the election of her sister to the Senate would be a “welcome development.”
After serving as Makati mayor for three consecutive terms for a total of nine consecutive years, Nancy was not qualified for re-election.
On the other hand, Binay’s prospective rival in the Makati mayoralty race would be the husband of Abby whose term ends in June 2025.
Binay said that running for mayor in Taguig is another option for Abigail.
The senator and Abby had reportedly suffered estranged relations after the latter ran against their brother, then Makati Mayor Junjun Binay who sought a second term in Makati.
Junjun lost in that elections.
In an interview on “Teleradyo Serbisyo,” the senator described her sister as a “feisty politician.”
Presently, Binay said she has been preparing for their looming political battle while she also has her own fight over some internal issue in the Senate.
She admitted it was tough as she shifts to another chapter in her life.
She remains thankful to the Filipino electorate because the Binays emerged victorious despite the mudslinging against them.
She said Abby has a good ranking in senatoriable surveys.
quot;I think its a validation whatever quot;demolition jobquot; against them, there is no truth to it since our people still see the Binays as leaders.
De Lima said she would not be seeking any elective post in the 2025 elections, saying she has other priorities for the time being.
De Lima, a former justice secretary under President Benigno Aquino III, was detained for nearly seven years after being linked by President Rodrigo Duterte#39;s administration to alleged narcotics syndicates.
All charges against her have been dismissed as of last month.
De Lima earlier said she plans to write a book about her incarceration, drawing inspiration from political figures like Nelson Mandela and the late Senator Benigno quot;Ninoyquot; Aquino Jr.
She also lamented the Liberal Party’s poor showing in recent surveys, saying the party faces an uphill battle.
quot; It’s really frustrating. We’re offering really very qualified candidates. It’s quite an uphill battle,
at least based on the survey. Next week we#39;re going to have a mancom (management committee) meeting to talk about plans to improve the party’s ranking, popularity, acceptability and winnability of our candidates, quot; she said.
Possible LP candidates in the upcoming elections include former senators Francis Pangilinan and
Bam Aquino, and human rights lawyer Chel Diokno.
Former Vice-President Leni Robredo will seek the mayoral post of Naga City in next year#39;s election, De Lima added.
