In celebration of its 126th founding anniversary, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Western Visayas has proudly inaugurated Sunset Boulevard in Iloilo City.

This new 4.9-kilometer road stretches from Barangay Tabucan Mandurriao to Cagbang, Oton, and extends to Abilay Sur, Oton, promising to be a fresh and eco-friendly destination for residents and visitors alike.

The soft opening was marked by a lively fun walk with DPWH employees. Former Senate President Franklin Drilon was also in attendance. The Ilonggo senator was credited for playing a pivotal role in the project’s inception.

The boulevard, now open to the public, offers a serene environment for those seeking a breath of fresh air and a green escape in the city.

According to DPWH Western Visayas Director Engr. Sanny Boy Oropel, the opening of Sunset Boulevard is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in the area while boosting tourism, economic growth, and infrastructure development.

He emphasized that this project aligns with the vision of a brighter and more sustainable future for Iloilo residents.

“This boulevard not only eases traffic, but also enhances the connectivity and economic potential of the region,” said Oropel. “It’s a step towards a more sustainable and vibrant Iloilo.”

Drilon lauded the DPWH for successfully bringing the project to fruition, underscoring its benefits for the local community.

“This is a milestone for Iloilo, providing a scenic route that will benefit many Ilonggos and foster economic development,” he said.

The environmental benefits of Sunset Boulevard were also highlighted, with the project supporting Iloilo’s greener initiatives. It promises to be a significant addition to the city’s efforts to promote eco-friendly and sustainable practices.

The opening ceremony was attended by notable figures including Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr., Uswag Ilonggo party-list Rep. James Ang, and other local officials, all expressing their support for the project and its potential to transform the region.
