LAS PIÑAS CITY—After capturing their fourth straight title in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 99 men’s volleyball tournament recently, the Perpetual Altas Spikers made a courtesy call on their Team Owner, Dr./BGen. Antonio L. Tamayo, Chairman/CEO and Founder of the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta on Tuesday at his office.
Multi-titled coach Sinfronio ‘Sammy’ Acaylar and back-to-back Most Valuable Player Louie Ramirez led the Altas’ tribute to the team owner and his son Anton Tamayo, who is the current team manager of Perpetual Altas Athletes.
“You have achieved history in the NCAA and in our school to record 14 titles in men’s volleyball under the leadership of Coach Sammy. We are all honored for this as a true-blooded Perpetualite,” said the elder Tamayo.
Acaylar and Ramirez presented their elegant NCAA Season 99 trophy, which they secured after their thrilling championship series against the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, whom they swept in two games in a best-of-three showdown to formally annex their 14th title in the 40-year-old tournament.
“It’s an honor to be able to play and bring honor to the entire Perpetualites, so this is all for you,” Ramirez said.
The NCAA MVP played his 5th and final year for the team.
Ramirez said he is transferring the leadership mantle to Season 99 Finals MVP Jefferson Marapoc in preparation for the league’s centennial celebration next year.
With an eye on a 15th overall title in NCAA season 100, the Altas Spikers also hope to match their “five-peat” record achieved from 1985 to 1989.
Along with Ramirez who will graduate this year are Michel Medalla, setter JC Enarciso, libero John Philip Pepito and Paul Teodoro, while still with the team are 2nd middle blocker awardee JC Andrade, Kirth Rosos, Klint Mateo, James Pascua, Kobe Tabuga, Exequiel Lituania, Dexter Arrozado, John Castil, Christina Tayonton, Dave Lares and Christian Taytayon.
“For now, we are celebrating, we are on our break. But after two weeks, we are back in training again in preparation for the next season. Our new recruits are coming in to join the training,” Acaylar said.
