Pope Francis clears path to recognize Blessed Carlo Acutis as the first ‘millennial saint’

In a significant step towards sainthood, Pope Francis has recognized a miracle attributed to Blessed Carlo Acutis, a young layman known for his devotion and modern evangelization efforts.

The decision was part of several decrees approved by the Pope, as reported by Vatican News on Thursday, May 23.

The approved miracle involves a Costa Rican woman, Liliana, who prayed to Blessed Carlo Acutis after her daughter, Valeria, suffered a severe head injury from a bicycle accident.

Valeria, who required critical brain surgery with slim survival chances, remarkably began to recover after Liliana’s pilgrimage to Carlo’s tomb in Assisi.

This recovery was considered miraculous, leading to the recognition of Blessed Carlo’s intercession.

A Modern Saint

Born on May 3, 1991, in London and passing away on October 12, 2006, in Monza, Italy, due to leukemia, Carlo Acutis was beatified by Pope Francis in 2020.

His remains rest in Assisi, where he made numerous pilgrimages.

Carlo is celebrated for his deep faith and adept use of technology to spread Catholic teachings, earning him the title of the “patron saint of the Internet.”

Miracles and Martyrs

Pope Francis also acknowledged a miracle attributed to Blessed Giuseppe Allamano, founder of the Consolata Missionaries.

This miracle involved the healing of Sorino Yanomami, an indigenous man from Cape Verde who survived a jaguar attack in 1996 after prayers to Allamano.

Additionally, the Pope recognized a miracle attributed to Venerable Giovanni Merlini, an Italian priest.

Further decrees honored the martyrdom of Polish priest Servant of God Stanislav Kostka Streich and Hungarian laywoman Servant of God Mária Magdolna Bódi, both killed by communists due to their faith.

Upcoming Canonizations

The decrees also acknowledged the heroic virtues of several individuals, including Italian Capuchin priest Guglielmo Gattiani and Spanish layman Ismaele Molinero Novillo.

Pope Francis announced plans for a Consistory of Cardinals to deliberate the canonizations of Blessed Carlo Acutis, Blessed Giuseppe Allamano, and other notable figures such as Marie-Léonie Paradis and Elena Guerra.
