PCO teams up with Meta, Google, TikTok to enhance ‘digital defense’

The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) is collaborating with major technology companies such as Meta, Google, and Tiktok through their representatives in the Philippines to enhance its “digital defense.”

During a recent UniComm 2024 gathering at the Bayleaf in Intramuros, Manila, PCO Undersecretary for Digital Media Services (DMS) Emerald Ridao said they are taking this action in response to the Marcos administration’s struggles against manipulated information.

“We are starting with our digital defense today because it is very clear to us that misinformation and disinformation campaigns against government programs, and against the persons within the administration are increasingly prevalent,” Ridao said in a news release.

The event, featuring “Tech Talks,” provided a platform for stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to unite in the battle against digital misinformation. Discussions centered on fortifying digital defenses amid the escalating tide of misinformation campaigns.

Representatives from META, Google, and TikTok shared insights and expertise on combating misinformation and disinformation.

META Public Manager Genixon David talked about the importance of securing social media accounts, advising users to employ strong, unique passwords and avoid using personal information as passwords.

Google Head of Government Affairs Yves Gonzales said YouTube has been trying to implement policies against spreading harmful medical information, stressing the platform’s commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment for users.

TikTok’s head of public policy in the Philippines and Malaysia, Toff Rada, highlighted the necessity of fostering critical thinking skills among users to discern between credible and false content.

In addition to addressing misinformation challenges, the conference shed light on tangible obstacles faced by government agencies, such as account hacking and the spread of fake news.

Proposals were made to mitigate these risks, including promoting critical thinking and refraining from widespread reporting of compromised accounts.

The PCO, in partnership with Meta, Google, and TikTok, reaffirmed their commitment to tackling online challenges and restoring the integrity of public discourse.
