Frasco endorses gastronomy tourism in Asia-Pacific region

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco underscored the growing importance of gastronomy tourism in the Asia Pacific region during the 3rd World Tourism Industry Conference (WTIC) in Seoul, Korea.

Frasco, who represented the Philippines as chair of the UN Tourism Commission for East Asia and the Pacific, highlighted the potential of food to drive economic growth and cultural exchange at WTIC on May 9.

The global forum coincided with the opening day of the Seoul International Travel Fair (SITF) 2024, happening from May 9 to 12, 2024.

Frasco addressed industry leaders, stressing Asia Pacific’s diverse culinary scene and its ability to attract tourists worldwide.

“Gastronomy tourism is not just about indulging in delicious food; it also has immense economic and cultural benefits for the Asia-Pacific region. This form of tourism attracts food enthusiasts from all over the world, creating opportunities for local businesses, farmers, artisans, and the like. It stimulates job creation, promotes sustainable agriculture, and preserves culinary traditions that have been passed down through generations,” she said.

Frasco pointed to a 2023 Booking.com report stating that 34 percent of travelers prioritize food and dining experiences.

The report said the trend reflects a desire for authentic cultural immersion and supporting local communities. Food tourism fosters a deeper understanding of local traditions and enriches the travel experience.

The Philippines recognizes the power of food tourism which was also mentioned in the National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP).

Initiatives like the “Philippine Experience Program” showcase lesser-known destinations and the “Salu-Salo” (feasting together) tradition. Additionally, the “Philippine Eatsperience” bazaar highlights Filipino cuisine.

The Philippines will host the First UN Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Asia and the Pacific in Cebu next month.

Frasco expressed the country’s commitment to leveraging its position in the UN Tourism Commission for East Asia and the Pacific through the promotion of regional initiatives that benefit all member countries.

The WTIC 2024 brought together tourism leaders from across Asia and the Pacific to discuss the future of gastronomy tourism. Participants included representatives from Korea, Bhutan, Zanzibar, the UNWTO and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA).
