The Land Transportation Office on Friday warned motorists of a new online scam that unlawfully imitates its traffic violation notification.
LTO chief Vigor Mendoza said he is now closely coordinating with the Philippine National Police to go after online scammers who are using the agency in its illegal money-making scheme.
The agency has also coordinated with its online payment partners.
“Your LTO is not sending a notice of violation. This system has not been working for a long time so any message you receive is definitely from scammers,” he said.
“We advise our citizens not to ignore and report it immediately to the appropriate authorities for appropriate action. On the part of the LTO, we are coordinating with our partners and other concerned government agencies to run after these people and protect the public,” he added.
The LTO chief raised alarm over the proliferation of a phishing scam being perpetrated by online scammers claiming the target victims have traffic violations.
The same text message contains a link to a fake LTO website.
Once all the details have been input to the fake websites, the selection of payment option would redirect the user to a counterfeit login page which is designed to steal their information.
Mendoza advised the public to directly communicate with any LTO branch should they receive such text messages.
