EMS, European firm team up to design items for women use

Filipino semiconductor firm EMS Group signed a partnership agreement with a European manufacturer of consumer electronic goods to jointly produce specific products that fit the female lifestyle.

EMS president and chief executive Perry Ferrer said the partnership identified a plant in Batangas province that could be retrofitted to be consistent with the specifications of the manufacturing project.

“This is a big project, and we are happy that we got to get this opportunity. We are now finalizing their entry into the Philippines. We have been constantly on the lookout for business and projects that are consistent with the way we do business in the Philippines. There have been numerous inquiries, and many have shown interest to relocate here,” Ferrer said at the sidelines of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) 1st general membership meeting (GMM) on Friday.

The facilitation of the plant will commence by June 2024 and may take three to four months. It should be ready for pilot testing by the fourth quarter.

Ferrer did not disclose the investment cost for the new project, but he said some 4,000 to 5,000 people would be given employment once the manufacturing project starts.

EMS is expanding to a new facility in Calabarzon from its Sta. Rosa plant in Laguna.

As the lead of innovation and science at the PCCI, Ferrer said the business group is actively brokering for foreign companies relocating from China to give the Philippines a chance to show what it can offer investors.

Two semiconductor companies are keen to transfer their businesses from China to the Philippines, he said.
