Shell set to launch more EV charging stations, seeks government incentives

Shell Pilipinas Corp. launched three electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in three malls last month as it remains bullish of the emerging EV industry, an executive said Wednesday.

“Just this February, we launched Shell Recharge stations at three mall locations in partnership with Ortigas Land, and we are looking at introducing more chargers this 2024 with more industry partners,” Shell Pilipinas country business manager for e-mobility, vehicle servicing, convenience retail and business alliance Josemarie Lorenzo Valdez said.

The company ended 2023 with over 25 charge points across eight locations.

“Shell Pilipinas will have a demand and partnership approach to growing our charging station footprint. We will grow where there is strong customer demand at pace with society,” Valdez said.

The company received approval from its shareholders to directly engage in the EV charging station business and to sell various services related to electric charging apart from the traditional fuels business.

Valdez said Shell Pilipinas started its electrification journey in 2022 and is already a leader in the EV space in the Philippines—introducing the latest global technologies in the market.

“Shell Pilipinas is the only company with a network of commercial Ultra-Rapid 180kW chargers for EV customers,” he said.

He said further local and national incentives for EV charging infrastructure would boost growth of the industry.

“The Philippine government has already introduced fiscal incentives for electric vehicle Manufacturers to bring in EVs to the country, it has also introduced some incentives for EV owners such as number coding exemption, the next step would be to introduce local and national incentives for EV charging infrastructure providers to support sustainable and continued charger expansion for charge point operators,” he said.

Valdez said Shell Pilipinas is also promoting EV charging stations powered by renewable energy as part of its sustainability initiative.

He said the company has two EV charging stations which are 100-percent RE powered including one at SLEX Mamplasan through Shell Energy Philippines and at NEO building in the Bonifacio Global City.

“Our other charging stations located on site in TPLEX are partially powered with renewable thru on-site solar facilities. In addition, though without charging stations, Our Shell Mobility station located in NLEX Tabang Bulacan is also 100 percent powered by Renewable Energy thru Shell Energy and we have approximately 150 other mobility stations powered with on-site solar technologies,” he said.
