PROSECUTORS of the Department of Justice (DOJ) resolved more cases last year compared to 2022 and 2021.

Records showed that the Office of the Secretary of Justice Prosecution Staff (OSJPS) logged an 89.30-percent rate of case disposition in 2023 as opposed to 85.13 percent in 2022 and 53.44 percent in 2021.

“The OSJPS was able to obtain a ‘Very Satisfactory’ adjectival rating for 2022 and has maintained such rating for 2023,” Prosecutor General Benedicto Malcontento said.

He said there has been “a significant reduction in ageing cases, and an increased rate of convictions vis-à-vis acquittals.”

The Prosecutor General also said the OSJPS has “a 100 percent resolution rate of Petitions for Review in 2023.”

Disposition of cases refers to the number of resolved complaints filed before the DOJ that underwent preliminary investigation to determine if the case should be quashed or filed in court.

The accomplishments of OSJPS for 2023 were disclosed by Benedicto during a recent planning assessment and general assembly.

During the event, Malcontento thanked all personnel of OSJPS for their collective efforts and “encouraged them to push it further so that the OSJPS can achieve an “outstanding rating for 2024.”
