Throughout history, dogs have been humans’ closest companions. Playful, lively, and sometimes comical, they stand as loyal companions, transforming the lives of those who welcome them into their lives and homes. But, caring for dogs can have its challenges, from cleaning up after them to frequent baths and the regular walks they demand.

Dogs are many things to many people, from exercise partners and adventure companions to attentive listeners and relaxation buddies. They enhance the lives of many individuals, but is owning a pet dog suitable for you?

Improved health for owners

Dogs are energetic companions that enjoy playing and require regular exercise. Those who have dogs tend to incorporate more physical activity into their daily routines to accommodate their pet’s needs.

“Dog owners are 54% more likely to achieve the recommended amount of exercise compared to those without dogs. Consequently, coupled with a stronger immune system from exposure to pet fur and dandruff, many dog owners experience reductions in blood pressure, triglyceride levels, and cholesterol levels, thus lowering their risk of heart disease,” said Kaitlyn Dieb in “Get Healthy, Get a Dog” published in the Dogs Guide website

Krauss, a rescue, of Save Animals of Love and Light-Save ALL Inc, has always been sweet and loving. He would always ask for a pat or a hug. He is a a perfect fit in the family. Finding a suitable dog like Krauss can be beneficial to your family’s mental and physical health.

Staying in shape and being active alongside your loyal companion

Your dog may require a couple of daily walks around the neighborhood. Taking your furry friend for walks can become a family activity. If you’re already enthusiastic about outdoor activities, having an energetic dog by your side will enhance your adventures.

Participating in training classes is a hands-on approach to strengthen the bond with your dog while acquiring new skills together. You can also engage in enjoyable training sessions at home.

Being active with your pet can bring about a sense of well-being and potentially offer long-term health benefits. A study conducted in 2019 discovered that owning a dog was linked to a longer lifespan, particularly among individuals who had experienced heart attacks or strokes.

Dogs can make you happier

“Dog owners exhibit lower rates of depression and typically have elevated levels of serotonin and dopamine compared to non-dog owners,” said Dieb.

“This is largely attributed to the calming presence and familiarity of dogs, which can reduce stress and anxiety,” Dieb added.

Dogs naturally facilitate social interaction, serving as conversation starters even for shy individuals. Increased social interaction is correlated with the development of fulfilling relationships, as demonstrated by a 2015 study indicating that pet owners were more likely to engage with local communities. Introducing a new dog into your life can expand your social circle and contribute to greater happiness.

These factors collectively enhance mental well-being and motivation, particularly in overcoming challenges such as getting out of bed or achieving fitness goals. They foster a sense of productivity and satisfaction.

Company and friendship at home or outdoors

A dog can offer companionship and friendship, transforming a mere house into a warm and welcoming home. Both children and adults frequently form deep connections with their canine companions.

“Dogs can serve as a source of comfort during challenging periods. In a study conducted in 2020, over 90% of owners reported that their furry friends helped them cope during the initial lockdown,” Dieb noted.

When you find a dog that suits both you and your family, it can be mutually beneficial. Dogs are social creatures that enjoy the company of their human counterparts.

Dog ownership can lead to increased feelings of happiness, tranquility, and connectedness.

Owning a dog can offer numerous benefits for your mental well-being. Spending time with your new furry companion can uplift your mood instantly and contribute to long-term emotional well-being. After a challenging day, cuddling with your dog can aid in relaxation and stress relief, provided your pet also enjoys the interaction.

Feeling secure with dogs around

Studies have shown that barking dogs help deter burglaries and other violent attacks. With heightened senses of hearing and smell, dogs can detect things you can’t and alert you to possible danger.

“A dogs’ natural instinct is often to protect their home and family – something that can be annoying when the mailman comes to the door but useful if someone more nefarious comes around,” said Dieb.

Whether you’re taking your dog out for a walk or lying in bed cuddling them, just having a dog around can help put your mind at ease, something that helps both your mental and physical health.
