The House of Representatives has implemented tighter security measures after legislators reported having received bomb threats.

House Secretary General Reginald Velasco made the statement as “there have been threats being received by members [thru mobile phones].” “I cannot reveal the names of those who have received threats, but some members (congressmen) have received [recent] threats,” Velasco said.

According to Velasco, “the threats indicate that the House of Representatives could be bombed.”

He said the House received “more than one” threat.  The first one received was sometime in January, he added.

Given the threats, Velasco said the House has been implementing a security set-up similar to preparations for the State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Velasco said the House leadership “takes all these threats seriously.”

“We just want to protect the members of the House of Representatives and staff and employees of the House from any untoward incidents.”

Velasco could not say, however, if the alleged bomb threats had something to do with the ongoing Charter Change efforts in Congress.

Nevertheless, he said security “has been tightened” at the House premises.
