The Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) hailed the government’s decision to declare Feb. 9 a special non-working holiday.
President Marcos earlier issued Proclamation No. 453, declaring Feb. 9, which is the eve of the Chinese Lunar New Year, as a holiday.
In a statement, the FFCCCII said the declaration has a “positive economic impact” as it opens avenues to attract Chinese and Asian tourists to the country, capitalizing on China and East Asia’s robust tourism markets.
This aligns with the national interest of promoting the Philippines as a prime tourist destination, the group said.
Diplomatically, this gesture serves “as a tangible expression of goodwill toward our traditional ally and largest trade partner, China, and it reaffirms the enduring friendship between the Philippines and the Chinese nation, rooted in a history spanning over a millennium,” the FFCCCII also said.
The declaration also resonates positively with other Asian nations like Korea, Vietnam and others which also celebrate this festival as their most important holiday, thus fostering regional harmony and cooperation, the group said.
Tourism–a crucial sector with vast potentials for economic growth–stands to gain significantly, the chamber said.
By positioning the Philippines as a destination for celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year, the country can become a preferred choice for Chinese and Asian tourists, thereby contributing to increased tourist arrivals, job creation, investment promotions and economic prosperity, the group said.
Moreover, this recognition of the Chinese Lunar New Year as an official national holiday symbolizes the Philippines’ commitment to cultural diversity, it added.
“By celebrating and acknowledging the importance of this festival for the Filipino Chinese community, it signifies the acceptance of our cultural heritage, further enriching the Filipino nation’s multicultural fabric and democracy,” it said.
The FFCCCII commended the President for his foresight, noting his visionary move not only enhances economic prospects but also strengthens diplomatic ties, the country’s international reputation, promotes tourism, and fosters cultural inclusivity.
“As we embark on this auspicious occasion and welcome the auspicious Year of the Dragon, the FFCCCII looks forward to a shared celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year, fostering unity, friendship, and prosperity for all,” it added.
