Herbosa’s healthcare revolution

The plan to establish ambulatory primary care centers across the nation is a groundbreaking measure

In the realm of healthcare, 2023 proved to be a transformative year for the Philippines, with the Department of Health spearheading initiatives that significantly enhanced the accessibility and quality of healthcare services for Filipinos nationwide.

Under the visionary leadership of DOH Secretary Ted Herbosa, the agency embarked on an ambitious journey to establish cutting-edge healthcare facilities, particularly in underserved provinces.

The Catheterization Laboratory (CathLab) at the Jose B. Lingad Memorial General Hospital in San Fernando City, Pampanga, stands as a testament to this commitment.

Completed in remarkable 120 days through the Health Facilities Enhancement Program, it now serves Central Luzon residents with state-of-the-art cardiac and non-cardiac procedures.

Herbosa’s strategic collaboration with various stakeholders, including government agencies and private entities like the Bloomberry Cultural Foundation, Inc., has been instrumental in constructing the Clark Multi Specialty Medical Center.

This upcoming facility, set to house specialized departments for heart, kidney, cancer, and pediatrics, showcases a forward-thinking approach to healthcare infrastructure.

A crucial aspect of the DOH’s mission is to bridge the healthcare gap in remote areas.

The “Libreng Laboratoryo, Konsulta, at Gamot Para sa Lahat” (Lab for All) caravan, launched in Laguna province, has been a commendable initiative aimed at providing free consultation, laboratory services, and medicines to the marginalized population.

Secretary Herbosa’s commitment to the Universal Health Care (UHC) law is also evident in the establishment of a Coordinating Council.

Approved by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., this council will oversee the implementation of UHC at both national and local government levels.

The comprehensive approach involves monitoring fund utilization, income from PhilHealth, and improving overall health systems.

Looking ahead to 2024, Herbosa envisions a modernized DOH that addresses healthcare inequities. The plan to establish ambulatory primary care centers across the nation is a groundbreaking measure. These centers, equipped with laboratories, medicines, and imaging facilities, aim to alleviate the burden on large hospitals, ensuring that healthcare is accessible to all.

The DOH’s 2024 priorities, ranging from increased immunization coverage to a focus on reducing maternal mortality and non-communicable diseases, reflect a holistic approach to public health.

Secretary Ted Herbosa’s leadership has ushered in a new era for the Department of Health, marked by innovation, collaboration, and a genuine commitment to the well-being of all Filipinos.

As we move forward, it is imperative for the government and society to continue supporting these initiatives, ensuring that the vision of accessible and high-quality healthcare for every Filipino becomes a sustainable reality.
