As natural pollinators, bees preserve the environment and its abundant ecosystem. They help plants grow to provide food and shelter for humans and animals. Besides this function, they also produce honey and beeswax, widely used as food and medicine.

Many farmers and entrepreneurs recognize the profitable and beneficial potential use of bees and their products. Among them is Milea Bee Farm in San Jose, Batangas.

Even though a little less than a hectare, the farm is bursting with life, thanks to the bees it cares for.

“Founded in 2010 by my parents, it is flourishing with veggies, vanilla, and our local stingless bees. We’re all about collaborating with nature and sparking that inspiration in others,” said Bettina Omoyon, 24, who holds a Master of Science in Management degree from the University of Asia and the Pacific.

She added that the bee farm began with a quest for authentic honey and beeswax for Milea Bath and Body, their family’s personal care brand, lovingly crafted by her mom. In the meantime, Omoyon’s dad had the bright idea to start the bee farm.

Milea Bee Farm raises native stingless bees (Tetragonula biroi), also known as lukot or kiwot in Tagalog. Its honey harvest varies annually, but the Omoyons have always been keen on teaching farmer “wannabees” while offering to buy back their harvest so it reaches the market.

“Growing up, I was soaked in the world of bees. My parents involved me (us children) in every aspect of the business, from farm visits to training seminars. Meeting fellow farmers they trained left an indelible mark on me. I am now on a mission to protect these vital pollinators and amplify their significance in our ecosystem,” Omoyon shared.

The Omoyons also created a more diverse range of products using bee by-products as raw materials for skincare items because honey contains natural antioxidants that fight free radicals, one of the leading causes of premature aging. Other products include throat sprays, propolis extracts, and luscious soaps, all available at www.milea.ph.

Omoyon encourages aspiring bee farmers to “start small, fuel their passion, and remember that even the tiniest actions can create a massive buzz.”

“You don’t need a vast plot of land to be a beekeeper. Just channel your passion and watch the world bloom. Join us in protecting bees, the environment, and our society, one buzzing step at a time,” she said.
