‘Ada’ strengthens into tropical storm

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on late Thursday afternoon announced that tropical cyclone “Ada” has intensified into a tropical storm.

It was assigned the international name “Nokaen,” contributed by Laos.

The center of the tropical storm was last estimated 400 kilometers east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, moving northwestward at 15 kilometers per hour (kph).

It had maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

Ada will move generally northwestward on Thursday through Friday, then north-northwestward to northward on Saturday.

According to PAGASA, the tropical cyclone is forecast to gradually intensify while moving over the Philippine Sea over the next 48 hours.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is raised over the following Luzon areas: the eastern portion of Camarines Sur (Caramoan, Presentacion, Garchitorena), Sorsogon, the eastern portion of Albay (Rapu-Rapu, Manito, Legazpi City, Bacacay, Santo Domingo, City of Tabaco, Malilipot, Malinao, Tiwi), and Catanduanes.

Signal No. 1 is likewise hoisted above the following Visayas areas: Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, the eastern portion of Biliran (Maripipi, Kawayan, Culaba, Caibiran, Cabucgayan), the eastern portion of Leyte (Carigara, Barugo, San Miguel, Babatngon, Tacloban City, Tunga, Jaro, Alangalang, Santa Fe, Palo, Dagami, Pastrana, Tanauan, Tabontabon, Julita, Dulag, Tolosa, La Paz, Mayorga, Macarthur, Javier, Abuyog, Mahaplag), and the eastern portion of Southern Leyte (Silago, Sogod, Libagon, Saint Bernard, Hinunangan, Hinundayan, Anahawan, San Juan, Liloan, San Ricardo, San Francisco, Pintuyan).

Finally, the Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur in Mindanao are also under Signal No. 1.
