DMCI Mining increases rehabilitation fund for Berong mine

DMCI Mining Corp. said Thursday it is increasing its rehabilitation fund for the Berong nickel mine by P50 million, bringing the total to P160 million.

Rehabilitation efforts started about six months ago, but Berong Nickel Corp. (BNC), a unit of DMCI Mining, said it is determined to overtake targets set for the rehabilitation of the mining concession.

“We’re so close, but we’re not a hundred percent done yet. I guess we’re about 99 percent, into it,” said DMCI Mining Corp. president Tulsi Das Reyes.

He said efforts to fast-track the rehabilitation was gaining traction as the company highlighted its commitment to sustainable mining practices and full compliance with the law.

DMCI Mining’s mother unit DMCI Holdings Corp. disclosed in September that BNC rehabilitated more than 30 hectares within its mining concession in Quezon, Palawan within months since it started the program.
