The Taguig City government has announced the inclusion of a 101-year-old woman in the list of centenarian awardees in Embo villages.
Mayor Laarni Cayetano and Councilor Raul Aquino personally visited Segundina Dela Cruz Laurente of Barangay Cembo to give her a birthday cash gift of P100,000 as part of the local government’s service extended to the villages now under the control of Taguig.
Through the Office of Senior Citizens Affairs, the city’s centenarians, like Lola Segundina, will continue to receive P100,000 in the next few years as long as they live.
Lola Segundina was the second centenarian awardee in Embo (Enlisted Men’s Barrio), next to Maura Agripa, a resident of Barangay Post Proper Southside.
Mayor Cayetano said each centenarian will receive a ₱100,000 cash gift when they turn 100 years old and will continue to receive the amount every year as long as they live. She added that recognition is one of the programs she initiated for senior citizens.
Under the program, senior citizens of the city also receive cash gifts ranging from P3,000 to P10,000 depending on their age bracket: P3,000 for those 60-69 years old, P4,000 for those 70-79 years old, P5,000 to those 80-89 years old, and P10,000 to those 90-99 years old.
The elderly also receive free medicine for diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and asthma; free nursing services at their residence; free wheelchairs, canes, and hearing aids.
Apart from their needs, seniors are also given entertainment at the Center for the Elderly, a five-story building in Barangay North Signal with a therapy pool, sauna, gym, ballroom area, massage room, and cinema.
Four years ago, Taguig opened the Center for the Elderly, a pioneer wellness hub for senior citizens.
In June, it also inaugurated a three-story multi-purpose hall in Barangay Wawa designed to serve as a venue for a wide range of activities and services for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Joel E. Zurbano
