President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wants to bolster Dinagat Islands’ tourism industry as part of the government’s efforts to rebuild the province and transform the country’s interisland connectivity.
In his speech during the rice distribution in San Jose, Dinagat, Mr. Marcos reiterated the administration’s commitment to rebuild the area from the damages wrought by Typhoon Odette.
“So it’s not just about the recovery of the damaged buildings like this one and those we see that were damaged during Typhoon Odette, but we also have a plan for Dinagat’s tourism industry,” said Mr. Marcos.
The province was battered by Odette back in 2021 and incurred around P3.9 billion worth of agricultural and infrastructure damages, affecting more than 34,000 families.
The President vowed to improve the area’s connectivity, such as putting up an airport and maximing the use of seaports to allow easier access for tourist.
“Dinagat is somewhat isolated, so we need to find a way to make the airport beautiful first, that’s the easiest,” Mr. Marcos said.
“Secondly, all Ro-Ro-equipped vehicles have been fully utilized. So it’s a big deal, it’s easier to go to Surigao now, you’re not having a hard time anymore,” he added.
Dinagat Islands has been known for its pristine beaches and is home to one of the largest bonsai forests in the country.
