Two peacekeepers in Mali were wounded Tuesday after a mine exploded in the centre of the West African country, the United Nations said.

“Our office in Mopti confirms an explosion near Amba village… injuring 2 peacekeepers who were part of a logistics convoy en route to the area,” the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) said on Twitter.

It did not specify the nationality of the soldiers.

Amba is 75 kilometres (47 miles) west of the town of Douentza in the Mopti region.

On Friday, another peacekeeper was seriously injured when his vehicle hit a mine near the town of Douentza.

The vehicle was part of a logistical convoy coming from Timbuktu.

Mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are a weapon of choice for jihadists who have been operating in the country since 2012.

MINUSMA has suffered nine attacks since the start of this year. Three peacekeepers have died and five have been injured.

Along with Malian armed forces, the UN mission is a primary target for jihadists.

With more than 12,000 military personnel currently deployed, it is one of the biggest UN peacekeeping missions, suffering a high death toll in particular to IEDs.

Since its creation in 2013, 185 of MINUSMA members have died in hostile acts.
