Renewable energy leader Energy Development Corporation (EDC) is one of the best companies to work for in Asia, according to a study conducted by HR Asia, the region’s leading and most authoritative publication for human resources professionals and talent management executives.
Published by Business Media International (BMI), HR Asia employs a proprietary organizational survey that evaluates a company as an employer of choice in its field. HR Asia’s Total Engagement Assessment Model (TEAM) measures the effectiveness of management initiatives through indicators that encompass three dimensions of employee engagement—CORE, Self and Group.
CORE or Collective Organization for Real Engagement evaluates company culture and ethics, leadership and organization, and activities involving employee wellness, learning and development, and self-actualization. Self, meanwhile, measures employee attitudes and behavior such as job ownership, belongingness and pride. Group analyzes collective consciousness, team workplace sentiment and team dynamics.
Across all three levels, EDC registered higher than market average scores, making it an exemplary business organization in terms of human resource management and employee engagement. It has been recognized by BMI with the HR Asia Best Companies to Work for in Asia Award 2022.
“We are very proud to receive this award because it validates our organization’s continuing efforts to foster a corporate culture that engages and cares deeply for the well-being of our employees, whom we consider as our co-creators,” says EDC Vice President for Human Resources Elizabeth Nasol.
“As a company with a distinguished history of pioneering geothermal power and producing 100% clean, renewable energy, we likewise know how to empower our employees and keep them whole,” she adds.
“Our culture is defined by four behaviors: accountability, performance excellence, collaboration and safety—or APCS. This has translated to genuine pampamilyang malasakit or familial concern for each other. Our culture then has harnessed the unique strengths of our employees to be a force for good for our customers, communities and for our planet, especially with EDC being a pure renewable energy company,” says EDC President and Chief Operating Officer Richard B. Tantoco.
The HR Asia TEAM survey and recognition also affirm the enduring culture of employee welfare in EDC. In 2021, the company’s annual organizational climate survey, based on the Willis Towers Watson Engagement Survey platform, reported a record-breaking employee engagement score of 95% despite the continuing challenges of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Tindog EDC, the company’s comprehensive COVID-19 response program for employees instituted at the start of the pandemic, has thus far provided a total of PHP 238 million in financial assistance and achieved 99.5% full vaccination of its more than 1,600 workforce. It also implements continuing efforts such as work-from-home and shelter-in-place arrangements, telecommunications and IT support, repurposed employee benefits and allowances, and donations to legitimate and recognized charitable institutions, among many others.
EDC is First Gen Corporation’s 100-percent RE subsidiary with over 1,480MW total installed capacity that accounts for 19 percent of the country’s total installed RE capacity. Its 1,188MW geothermal portfolio comprises 62 percent of the country’s total installed geothermal capacity and is the third largest geothermal producer in the world.
