Authorities found Thursday the last missing victim from the collapse of a suspended steel bridge in Dasmarinas City, Cavite, bringing the death tally to eight in all, mostly youngsters.
The body of a 14-year-old victim was discovered at 2:28 p.m. and retrieved at 3:10 p.m., Barangay Information Officer April Rose Movido said in reports.
The steel bridge in Sitio Talisayan, Barangay Sampaloc IV, where the youths were playing, collapsed on Tuesday evening. Authorities retrieved the bodies of the seven other victims on Wednesday.
Aside from the deaths, five others were injured in the accident, including three teenagers and a 12-year-old girl.
In a Facebook post yesterday, Dasmarinas Mayor Jenny Austria-Barzaga expressed condolences to the victims’ families and that the local government unit will assist the grieving families.
Councilor Kiko Barzaga, who posted pictures of the bridge on his social media accounts, said two of the injured victims have been hospitalized, while three others sustained minor bruises.
The Dasmariñas City Police earlier said the 13 victims were hanging out at the bridge, known locally as “Tulay na Luma” or “Tulay na Hapon,” when it collapsed into the river beneath.
The bridge had already been closed to the public, but some residents still hang out there despite its compromised structural integrity.
