Rise in PH internet speed greets PBBM admin

The Marcos administration was welcomed with increases in internet download speeds in both fixed broadband and mobile for the Philippines by Ookla Speedtest Global Index’s June 2022 report.

The country’s fixed broadband median speed increased to 68.94Mbps from 60.09Mbps registered the month before. Average download speed  for fixed broadband clocked in at 94.66Mbps.

Mobile median speed also increased as the country yielded a download speed of 21.41Mbps from 19.26Mbps the month before.

Average download speed for mobile clocked in at  50.57Mbps.

The improvement in internet speed is a welcome development  as DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy fulfills President Marcos’ marching orders to improve connectivity and e-governance in the country.

Improvement on internet speed is largely attributed to the streamlining and speeding up of the issuance of LGU permits as telcos are able to fast-track building infrastructure (cellular towers and fiber optic network) necessary in boosting services and connectivity.

The entry of Elon Musk’s Starlink in the Philippine market is also expected to improve internet speeds further.

The service offers high speed low latency satellite internet service with download speed between 100Mbps to 200Mbps.  \Using advanced satellites in a low orbit, Starlink will enable video calls, online gaming, streaming and other high data activities that historically have not been possible with satellite internet.
