The government’s total outstanding debt as of end-May 2022 declined P267.41 billion or 2.1 percent to P12.50 trillion from the record P12.76 trillion in end-April 2022 due mainly to the repayment of provisional advances from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the Bureau of the Treasury said Friday.

Of the total debt stock, 30.7 percent was secured externally while 69.3 percent were domestic borrowings.

Domestic debt amounted to P8.67 trillion as of May, which is P270.40 billion or 3.0 percent lower compared with the end-April 2022 level.

“This resulted from the P300.00 billion repayment to the BSP which was partially tempered by the net issuance of government securities. From the end-December 2021 level, outstanding domestic debt has increased by P495.04 billion or 6.1 percent,” the Treasury said.

But external debt was P2.99 billion or 0.1 percent higher from the previous month at P3.83 trillion.

“For May, the increment in external debt was attributed to the impact of local and foreign currency fluctuations against the US dollar amounting to an additional P5.63 billion and P9.41 billion, respectively,” it said.
