A US-based Filipino book author will file a $1 million damage suit against world boxing champ and Senator Manny Pacquiao for breach of contract in the publication of a biography book highlighting his personal life.
Alfredo Llana, a former journalist and author of several political books in the Philippines said that he met Pacquiao in the United States sometime in August 2021 where they discussed publishing the Filipino boxing champ’s life history, from being a cigarette vendor in Saranggani, Mindanao province to a successful professional boxer and politician.
Pacquiao, who is the only boxer in history to have won twelve major world titles in eight different weight divisions, “agreed in principle” with Llana to write and publish the Filipino boxing hero’s memoir.
In 2021, a book entitled “Born to Lead, The Ascendancy of Manny Pacqiuao” came out from the printing press, with copies already distributed in several bookstores in the US.
Under the “verbal agreement”, Pacquiao will buy at least 25, 000 copies of the book, which he said would be distributed to all SK chairman nationwide.
However, Pacquiao could not be reached after the book was published, failing to honor the verbal agreement with Llana.
In his complaint, Llana cited that Pacquiao gave his approval to publish the book in the presence of his former coach, Emil Romano, businessman Peter Cadorna, Fleurese Llana, and the book author himself in Pacquiao’s mansion in the US.
In the US, certain contracts must be in writing. However, some contracts are agreed upon verbally and treated the same as written contracts. If a person does not fulfill their part of the verbal contract, there may be grounds to sue—but it will depend on the overall nature of the agreement and stipulations involved, Llana said
