First Gen subsidiary says restoration of Avion natural gas plant completed

Prime Meridian Powergen Corp., a subsidiary of First Gen Corp., said Unit 1 of the 97-megawatt Avion open-cycle natural gas-fired power plant in Batangas City is now available after the successful testing and commissioning.

First Gen said it was advised by PMPC that GE, the original equipment manufacturer, completed the recommissioning and testing activities of Unit 1 of the Avion Power Plant using both natural gas and liquid fuel.

“The unit is now commercially available on both natural gas and liquid fuel,” First Gen said.

The Avion power plant is owned by PMPC and located within the First Gen Clean Energy Complex in Batangas City. In December, PMPC found damage to the compressor of one of two gas turbines of the Avion power plant.

The Avion power plant features two units that utilize General Electric LM6000 PC dual fuel aero-derivative gas turbines/generators.

Avion Unit 2, which was previously damaged in August and subsequently brought back to service by GE in October 2021, was not affected.

The power plant started commercial operations on Sept. 26, 2016 and has the capability to run on either natural gas or diesel, and its turbines have the flexibility to ramp up quickly and to do unlimited daily starts and stops, making it the ideal merchant peaking plant in First Gen’s portfolio of assets.

The plant’s flexibility allows it to provide ancillary services which is integral to ensure the stability and reliability of the power grid.
