Garcia, Frayna seize chess lead

International Master Jan Immanuel Garcia and Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna took the lead after four rounds of the six-round grand finals of the national men’s women’s chess team selection for the Southeast Asian Games.

The 27-year-old Garcia now has 2.5 points after posting two wins and a draw in his rapid tournament duel with GM Darwin Laylo in the men’s division at the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence in Quezon City.

Frayna also has 2.5 points in the women’s division in her six-round showdown with IM Antoinette San Diego.

Garcia stayed ahead in his clash with Laylo after they drew in 20 moves of a Zukefort opening.

In the distaff side, Frayna gained the upperhand after she turned back San Diego in 20 moves of a London System.
