The UAAP All-Stars Chess team, composed of former collegiate standouts National Master Emmanuel Emperado, Leonard Reyes and Richard Villaseran, bagged the top prize in the Estavillo and Ozaraga Cup Rapid Chess Tournament recently.
Emperado, Reyes and Villaseran fashioned out convincing 3-0 shutout victories in the 4th and 5th rounds to pull away from the field. They settled for a 1.5-1.5 draw in the last round anchored by Villaseran’s win in the last round to seal the championship.
Individual Board Gold Medalists were Ryan Dungca in Board 1, Vince Medina in Board 2 and Richard Villaseran in Board 3.
The chess team of Larry Dumagdag composed of Ryan Dungca, Harrison Maamo and Paul Sanchez settled for the runner-up honors.
Close to 50 teams participated in the tournament with top players like national team mainstay International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia competed in the said tournament.
