Too much sugar raises the risk of weight gain and various health problems including heart disease, according to the World Health Organization.
To lower, if prevent, these health problems, the WHO recommends adults and children to reduce their daily intake of free sugars to less than 10 percent of their total energy intake. A further reduction to below five percent, or roughly 25 grams or six teaspoons for women per day and 38 grams or nine teaspoons for men, would provide additional health benefits.
To allow those with sweet tooth to indulge in their favorite treats without suffering the effects of high blood sugar level, organic health and wellness brand Santé launches an alternative sweetener.
SweetVia is made of stevia and inulin sweetener.
Stevia is a natural substitute for sugar, derived from the leaves of a small perennial green shrub. This plant has shown medicinal properties that are anti-diarrheal, anti-tumor, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory actions. Scientific evidence also shows that Stevia is best for indications, such as reducing high blood sugar levels and high blood pressure.
Inulin, on the other hand, is a natural soluble dietary fiber from a chicory plant that promotes better digestive health. It acts as food for the beneficial bacteria in the colon. Studies suggest that inulin relieves constipation, promotes weight loss, and helps control blood sugar levels.
“It is hard to stay healthy these days, especially with the influx of sweeteners everywhere. Made from natural ingredients, SweetVia does not only sweeten your beverage, it also provides benefits to your health,” said Minette Carag, chief product officer of Santé.
According to the brand, SweetVia is ideal for weight management and does not increase sugar levels, hence its tagline, “Treat without the guilt.”
It is available at supermarkets and other retail stores nationwide.
