The Manila International Airport Authority on Monday assured the public the flooding at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 4 during heavy rains last Saturday will not happen again.
MIAA general manager Eddie Monreal said it will not happen again “because we will do everything to make it fixed.”
Monreal said the flash flood happened at the terminal because the facility was the lowest point of the ramp from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 and appeared to be like a catch basin.
He said the pumping stations installed at the terminal were not able to handle the capacity or volume of the rain waters came which resulted in the overflow.
All five high-capacity pumps in the area were working at the time of the downpour. However, the volume of rainwater which collected in the area was just too much for the pumps to pump-out towards the canals leading to the river, according to Monreal.
In spite of the flooded tarmac, flight operations at the terminal went in a normal status with buses being used to shuttle the passengers to and from the ramp where parked aircrafts located just a few meters away from the terminal.
The engineering department of MIAA is now in its final stage of implementation to get away the rainwater straight to canal within seconds.
