An innovative partnership model that will link the resources of private companies with local government units to establish disaster-resilient LGU systems has been launched by the National Resilience Council, with SM Prime Holdings Inc., taking the lead in the Adopt-A-City campaign.
During the launch, NRC president Antonio Yulo Loyzaga, together with Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno and SM Prime Holdings Inc. executive committee chairman Hans Sy signed a memorandum of understanding to seal the partnership.
“We are very glad to launch the Adopt-A-City Campaign, which is a great way to encourage the private sector to become more involved in disaster resilience as it can in fact be made part of each business’ core business value cycle,” said Loyzaga.
“Disaster resiliency is not the job of the government alone. It is a job that can be successful on collaboration with the government. The government sector alone can succeed only if both the private sector and the government will work together,” said Sy.
In addition to Cagayan de Oro, SM has pledged to support the cities of Naga and Iriga, investing in the reduction of these cities’ old and new disaster risks and helping them immediately recover after possible disasters or unforeseen events.
SM has also been involved in other sustainability projects such as recycling their water and installing catchment basins in their malls to avoid flooding.
