Brits eye $500-million power plant

Balanga City, Bataan—A group of businessmen from the United Kingdom is eyeing to construct a US$500-million waste-to-energy 100-megawatt power plant here, local officials said.

David Wood, a British banker, met with Bataan Vice Gov. Cris Garcia and other officials to discuss the proposal, which will not cost the provincial government a single centavo.

The waste-to-energy power plant will adopt an Australian technology, which is reputed to be operating with net-zero emission compared to other power generation technologies.

Wood said under this scheme, the waste that would normally go to landfills is converted to energy, “thereby reducing carbon dioxide emission.”

He said the plant would need 1,500 tons of garbage a day as feedstock.

If the garbage supply will not be enough, the company will ask farmers to plant Napier grass as fuel for the power plant, which will provide additional income for the residents, Wood added.

Mar Supnad, a newsman who introduced the investors to provincial officials, said the provincial government will provide 15 hectares of land as counterpart.

He said ES Guinto Builder, headed by its president Architect Everly Guinto, will be tapped to build the facility.

Edgardo Rivera, CEO of Disruptive Corp. which will provide the technology and the machinery, said they will strictly comply with the country’s Solid Waste Management Act.

“It will be the first such technology converting solid wastes to energy in Bataan,” Garcia said.
