When Gina “Conviction” Iniong walks into the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand this Saturday, 16 February, she will be battling for something more than herself.

Iniong battling for ailing mom

Iniong will take on Jihin "Shadow Cat" Radzuan at ONE: CLASH OF LEGENDS with the motivation of winning for her family, who is going through a difficult time at the moment.

The Filipina’s mother was diagnosed with a stage 5 chronic kidney disease, which definitely took the Iniong household by surprise.

For the 29-year-old, now — more than ever — is the best time to bring home a victory for her family, especially her mom.

“When we found out about her condition, we were all shocked. We were so clueless. Next thing we know, it’s already in stage 5,” the atomweight shared.

“My mother didn’t want to go to the hospital even though she felt ill. It was only when my older sister noticed swelling [all] over her body that we were able to bring her to the hospital.”

Iniong has been diligently preparing for her bout at Team Lakay in Baguio City, but when she is not training at the famed gym, she is spending the rest of her time taking care of her mother, who is currently going through dialysis treatment.

“When we found out, the advice of the doctor was to undergo dialysis. We provided her with everything she needs. We’re working hand in hand for her,” Iniong explained.

“We know that no matter the hardships we go through, the whole family will be there to support you. That’s how we show our love.”

Make no mistake about it, Iniong will be entering her atomweight mixed martial arts bout with tons of respect for Jihin.

However, when the match begins, all of that will be pushed to the side. This time, she is competing for her mother and is motivated to bring the win back home to her family.

“I trained very hard for this. I am really prepared and I am really determined to win,” Iniong said.

"I’m dedicating my upcoming bout to my mother and the whole family.”
