Denim goes back to basics

Last year’s denim trends had all that drama—extreme flares, pearl embellishments, distressed patchwork. This time, it’s all about going back to its playful, classic character.

Denim goes back to basics
NO FRILLS, JUST BASIC. Simple yet versatile denim pieces, such as jeans, denim blouses and shirts, and jackets in a variety of shades, reign supreme this season.

Instead of novelty items with add-ons that’ll get quick likes on Instagram, these pieces are versatile building blocks for one’s wardrobe. Think of Bella Hadid in stellar denim-on-denim outfit or Kendall Jenner in her distressed jeans.

Surplus offers a wide range of versatile denim pieces that transcend seasons and trends.

Skinny jeans with straight leg jean that is the silhouette for many brands—from Balenciaga and Saint Laurent to high street denim agenda setter Weekday—may not have left the trends but they sure are hotter now.

Meanwhile, white denim returns as the coolest denim trend, cooler still with frayed edges.

Play with shapes in similarly opposing silhouettes, for instance, a slim denim jacket worn with a wide leg bottom. Or go tonal by mixing shades of blue—a deep dark wash with a slightly lighter indigo for a softer, more modern take on the denim-on-denim look.

Fashion loves the contrast, and denim is no exception. Try mixing a thicker, heavier denim with a lighter fabric to add a nice, unexpected sense of texture.

Surplus carries a wide range of denim and other versatile and trendy pieces. Its stores are located in most SM Supermalls.
