QUEZON City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte said Monday her plan to run for mayor in the 2019 elections depends on “God’s will.”
“If my becoming mayor would achieve my goal to improve the people’s welfare, well and good. But if it is not the will of God, that would just be fine with me,” said Belmonte, who turned 48 last March 15.
Quoting Education Secretary Leonor Briones, Belmonte said a true public servant must not dream of getting a high position simply for “selfish reasons.”
“We must not only think of ourselves, but of the betterment of the people,” she said.
When asked if getting elected as mayor was one of her personal birthday wishes, she said “no.”
“No, it’s not one of my wishes. My wish is that every resident of Quezon City will have a better life,” she added.
According to Belmonte, as a public servant, she has dedicated her life to the people.
“When you’re an elected public official, you lose your personal life. Your personal life is the people. You become a public figure,” she said.
