AFP: Helicopters from Canada for rescue ops only

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) seeks to stress that the 16 Bell helicopters it is buying from Canada will not be sent to combat operations.

AFP Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans and Programs Major General Restituto Padilla told Agence France-Presse that the planes will not be used as attack helicopters.

The statement comes, amid reports that the Canadian government is reviewing the deal following information that the fleet could be used in the AFP's internal security operations.

Ottawa maintains the helicopters are meant for rescue and humanitarian missions in calamity areas.

The Philippine government is acquiring 16 new Bell helicopters for the total price of $ 233 million or P 12 billion.

The deal was signed in December last year.

The units will arrive in nine months.

The AFP is careful not to raise any glitch in this transaction.

President Rodrigo Duterte and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had already clashed over the issue on human rights.

Trudeau had called Duterte's attention to the alleged extra-judicial killings in the Philippine government's war against illegal drugs.

Duterte saw Trudeau's remarks as a personal insult.
