The House of Representatives on Monday approved on third and final reading a measure which seeks to recognize the civil effects of church-decreed annulment by an overwhelming 203 votes.

The Lower House, presided by deputy speaker and Taguig Rep. Pia Cayetano, approved the substitute House Bill 6779 or “An Act Recognizing the Civil Effects of Church Annulment Decrees” principally sponsored by Leyte Rep. Yedda Marie Kittilstvedt-Romualdez and deputy speaker and Cebu Rep. Gwendolyn Garcia.

“From the bottom of my heart, I thank my colleagues for the swift passage of the bill without jeopardizing the indissolubility of marriage,” said Romualdez, vice chairperson of the House committee on government enterprises and privatization.

At present, the State recognizes divorce under the Code of Muslim Personal Laws of the Philippines, which is based on the Sharia, or Islamic law.
